Oct 27, 2024

Did you know All Saints' Day was originally celebrated on May 13, honoring the martyrs and saints of the church? In the 9th century the day was moved to November 1st. While the weather is nicer, there is tension in that air: Halloween is the same day as Samhain, the Celtic festival of winter and they day they believe the boundary between the living and the dead is opened. That sounds very spooky!

But wait, it gets better! The Day of the Dead, a celebration, rooted in Mexican culture, is also that day. It honors the deceased with altars, offerings, and joyful tributes. Hence the colorful costumes of dancing skeletons! So at weeks end we will see see kids dressed as skeletons, witches, and angels all ringing doorbells together. How crazy is that?

As we approach these overlapping traditions, we are reminded that we are not prudes; we can still celebrate! However, we need to do so in a way that honors our faith. We can approach All Hallows' Eve as an opportunity for others to meet a living saint - each of you who thrive in Christ! Our trunks and treats become an invitation for others to witness our light shining brightly.  On a night that craves darkness let us all come together and be the church shining brightly on the hill!
