Jacob was driven by a desire to secure his birthright and inheritance. To that end, he resorted to deception, which caused rifts and tensions that forced him to constantly be on the run, never fully able to find peace. As his story unfolds, we witness how these labels and perceptions shaped his identity and strained his relationships. In the end, Jacob lived up to the meaning of all the derogatory names.

The same is true for almost everyone who allows themselves to be defined by perceptions or past mistakes. They risk becoming trapped in cycles of behavior that cause harm. The lesson invites us to consider how we may be living up to limiting labels. Are we living our “name?”
