School for little children

who we are

The School for Little Children is a state licensed center, owned by Coldspring United Methodist Church.  The center is located at 10 Cemetery Road, Coldspring, Texas.  The telephone number is (936) 653-3866.  The Director is Sherry Wagner.  Hours of operation are 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday year round.

The School for Little Children has served as a mission of the church since January 1993. We are a licensed childcare facility serving Coldspring as well as surrounding areas.  At the present time the school is permitted to have 60 children present at one time. We  also have the rating of a 4 star vendor through the Texas Workforce Commission’s Texas Rising Star program. There are 8 full time staff members. Each one receives at least 30 hours training per year and must remain CPR and first aid certified. We use The Frog Street Curriculum and strive to be developmentally appropriate at all times. Our daily lesson plans focus on Godly characteristics as well as the use of Bible stories and songs.

The School for Little Children encourages children to choose freely from a wide range of play and learning experiences, and in doing so, help them to recognize, understand and express their own emotions as well as to sympathize with the emotions of others. The variety of experiences include opportunities for creative self-expression through the media of dance, musical rhythm, and art; development of manipulative skills and motor coordination through carpentry, puzzles, blocks, bikes and climbing equipment; the increase of knowledge through excursions, cooking and science activities; the development of concepts through exposure to materials which stimulate basic awareness; growth of language skills through stories, songs, and dramatic play; and relaxation through water play and other quiet activities.

Statement of Philosophy

We believe in the value of human diversity and the fair treatment of all people.  It must be our number one goal to provide the kind of environment and the kind of influences that encourage all children to become creative, independent, responsible, fully functioning self-directed adults who can make decisions for themselves.  Secondly, as adults we must strive to continue learning and growing in our relationships with others so that we may nurture a peaceful environment and surround the children with understanding, warmth, and giving

Feature One

We believe all children have the right to feel good about themselves and it is the responsibility  of all teachers to nurture the child’s self-esteem.

Feature Two

We believe that all our educational and guidance decisions for children must be based on our  knowledge of child development.

Feature Three

We believe each person is a unique individual and has her/his own needs.  Each person has a right to meet this need in their own way and in their own time.  However, one of the responsibilities of having rights is recognizing and respecting the rights of others.

Feature Four

We believe everyone is entitled to feelings, “good and bad”, as well as the trial and error process that goes with feelings.  It is important for people to understand these  rather than deny them.

Feature Five

We believe in appreciating and supporting the close ties between the child and family and that  children are best understood in the context of their family, culture and society.

Feature Six

We believe creativity, self-expression and curiosity are expressions of individuality and should  be encouraged to develop in all people.

Let's work together.
