Remember the song "Don't Worry, Be Happy"? The lyrics were fun and suggested we live with a carefree attitude. But Jesus’ perspective on how we should handle life's anxieties was different. In the Sermon on the Mount, He says, “Don’t Worry,” but he’s talking about our basic needs, reminding us of God's care for even the smallest creatures. His teaching isn't about ignoring problems, but about cultivating a deep trust in what God provides. Jesus invites us to a deeper reliance on God's care, assuring us that our heavenly Father knows our needs and values us far more than the birds of the air or the flowers of the field. Jesus' approach could be summed up as "Don't Worry, Be Happy – Because, you Pray!" This offers more than temporary happiness; it's a lasting peace rooted in a relationship with God.
The Apostle Paul, writing from prison, gives us practical guidance on how to pray away our anxiousness. He emphasizes that our prayers should include giving thanks to God for promising a peace that surpasses understanding. When we pray, Paul advises us to focus on what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy.
