New Reading Plan Up

Time to Do Something New!!!
A Four-Week Reading Plan in Chapter 4 of Luke

Hello everybody.  I am a bit late to the game with this blog for the Epiphany season, but I had a great idea (an epiphany). I decided to break down the Gospel of Luke into managable chunks for us to read this year.  I want us to go through as much of Luke as I can get in front of you - all they way to Advent 2025 when we move to Matthews Gospel.

Here is how this works - Monday is the first day of the weekly reading plan.  Read the recommended scripture each day leading to Sunday - it might just be a snippet. On Sunday I will preach on what you read that week.  This should make the Sermon more engaging. I sometimes chose a short passage for you to read. When that happens it's because there is a deeper message there.  Dig in! No scripture is throw away - but often get's lost.

The season of Epiphany is all about discovering who Jesus is and what God has revealed to us through Him. It’s a time to reflect on how Jesus is the light of the world, bringing hope, healing, and redemption. Luke 4:1-44 fits perfectly into this season because it shows us the very beginning of Jesus’ ministry. We often think of Jesus being fully divine right at birth - and he was - but the Holy Spirit did not light upon him until the Baptism by John in the previous chapter... Now we dive into His purpose, His power, and His heart for people.

Here is an outline of the four weeks:

Week 1: The Temptation of Jesus (Luke 4:1-13)
We start with Jesus in the wilderness, fasting for forty days and facing off with the devil. It’s a story of struggle, but also a story of victory. God’s Word is a powerful weapon, and Jesus understands what we’re going through.

Week 2: Jesus Announces His Mission (Luke 4:14-30)
Next, we follow Jesus back to His hometown synagogue in Nazareth. Here, He boldly announces His mission: to bring good news to the poor, freedom to the oppressed, and healing to the brokenhearted. It’s an exciting moment, but not everyone is thrilled.

Week 3: Jesus’ Authority Over Evil (Luke 4:31-37)
In Capernaum, Jesus begins to show His authority in a very real way. He casts out a demon in the synagogue, leaving everyone amazed at His power.

Week 4: Jesus Heals and Spreads the Good News (Luke 4:38-44)
Finally, we see Jesus healing and preaching the good news of God’s Kingdom. He heals Peter’s mother-in-law, cares for the sick, and drives out demons, all while staying focused on His mission.

I know I preached on the Epiphany on the fifth - but the season is six weeks long and is a time of revelation, of seeing Jesus more clearly, and understanding what He came to do.

I think  Luke 4:1-44 is a perfect text for this season because it shows us who Jesus is: the One who overcomes temptation, proclaims good news, sets people free, and brings healing.  Amazing how it ends just in time for the season of temptation - Lent!  See what I did here...

I hope you find this useful.  If you do, let me know...  And remember, as you read through this chapter over the next four weeks, let it prepare your heart for worship and remind you of the hope we have in Him.

Jesus is still at work today, bringing light into the world—and into our lives.

Sorry such a long blog - but this one is fun already!
