Merry Christmastide

On the First Day of Christmas my True Love Gave to Me ...
Two Turtle Doves

I hope you had a chance to read yesterday’s (one day late) posting that kicks off this 12-day blog series. In that post, I explained what this blog series would be about and that I was going to avoid the old folklore and create my interpretation of the verses. Here we are on day two...

The Symbolism of the Turtle Doves
Turtle doves are often associated with love and fidelity, making them a fitting symbol for the Christmas season. In the Song of Solomon, we read, "The flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtle dove is heard in our land" (Song of Solomon 2:12). I’m not normally a sentimental type, but these verses really capture the essence of love blooming in the warmth of spring, mirroring the love that Christ brings into our lives. OK – maybe I can be a bit gushy!

In the New Testament, the angels proclaim, "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests" (Luke 2:14). This declaration is a reminder that the birth of Jesus is the pronouncement of peace and goodwill, much like the gentle cooing of the turtle doves. Their presence symbolizes the harmony and love that Christ embodies.

Love and Peace in the Christmas Message
As we think about the significance of two turtle doves, we are reminded of the love shared between God and humanity. Did you know that turtle doves mate for life? We, too, are called to love one another deeply and faithfully—for life. The message of Christmas is one of connection, compassion, and unity. This is a time to encourage everyone we encounter. It’s a time to strengthen our relationships with family, friends, and our communities.

In a world that often feels divided, the symbolism of the turtle doves can be our call to embrace peace and love in our hearts. As we continue our journey through the Twelve Days of Christmas, let us carry the message of the turtle doves in our hearts. May we strive to live out the love and peace proclaimed by the angels, fostering relationships that reflect the divine love we receive from God.
