Advent 2024 - Day 19
Day 19: Thursday, December 19, 2024
Primary Scripture: Luke 3:12-13
Supporting Scriptures: Micah 6:8; Proverbs 11:1
Who reading this likes the IRS? I think the biggest complaint most of us have is that the tax code is too complicated and we seem to be paying more than we should - what ever that is. However, without tax collection many of the basic necessities of government could not function. However, back in antiquity the tax collectors would overtax on purpose to they could live lavishly. They wore dishonesty like a merit badge. John has a thing or two to say to them!
When tax collectors come to John, asking what they should do, he tells them to collect no more than they are required to. This is a simple yet profound command: Live with integrity. For the tax collectors, repentance meant turning away from greed and dishonesty and committing to fairness and justice.
Micah 6:8 reminds us that God requires us to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him. Similarly, Proverbs 11:1 declares that God delights in honest scales. Integrity is not just about avoiding wrongdoing—it is about actively choosing to do what is right, even when it is difficult or costly. It used to be a person was as good as their handshake. It would be nice to see that kind of integrity again.
As we reflect on this passage, let us ask ourselves: Are we living with integrity in all areas of our lives? Are we honest in our relationships, our work, and our dealings with others? This Advent, let us recommit to living in a way that honors God and reflects His justice and mercy.
Let's Pray:
Lord, teach us to live with integrity in all that we do. Help us to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with You. Show us the areas of our lives where we need to grow in honesty and fairness, and give us the courage to make things right. May our lives reflect Your truth and justice. Amen.
