Advent 2024 - Day 18
Day 18: Wednesday, December 18, 2024
Primary Scripture: Luke 3:10-11
Supporting Scriptures: Isaiah 58:6-7; 1 John 3:16-18
When i watch action movies I am always struck by the characters that get stuck in their moment - "What do I do?" , they shout. I'm either saying, "run you fool," or "You going to kiss her or not?" (True story - When Becky and I got married I was so distracted by the moment she had to ask me that - 'You gonna kiss me or not!' - lol). In reality, making decisions can be paralyzing for many people. We are more afraid of doing the wrong thing than failing to do the right thing. It was the same thing for the people gathered around John the Baptist.
When the crowd asks John, “What should we do?” his response was surprisingly (for me) practical and simple: Share what you have with those in need. True repentance is not just about turning away from sin but also about turning toward love and generosity. It is about aligning our lives with God’s heart for justice and compassion.
I'm guessing John was recalling the directive from Isaiah 58:6-7 that reminds us, true worship involves caring for the hungry, the oppressed, and the homeless. Similarly, 1 John 3:16-18 challenges us to love not just with words but with actions and in truth. These passages call us to live out our faith in tangible ways, serving others as an expression of our love for God.
As we prepare for Christmas, let us remember that the holiday is not just about receiving but about giving. Are there people in your life or community who are in need of help, encouragement, or support? How can you reflect God’s love through acts of compassion and generosity?
Let's Pray:
Lord, help us to live out our faith through acts of love and generosity. Open our eyes to the needs around us, and give us hearts that are willing to serve. Teach us to reflect Your compassion and kindness in all that we do, so that others may experience Your love through us. Amen.
