Advent 2024 - Day 6
Day 6: Friday, December 6, 2024
Primary Scripture: Luke 21:34-35
Associated Scriptures: 1 Peter 5:8-9; Matthew 25:1-13
The day after Thanksgiving, Becky and I trekked out to Walmart for the Black Friday sales - Yes we did that. We preordered an item but instead of going to eh drive up pickup we went inside. You guessed it, we left with a basketful. We got distracted by all the other stuff we lost our focus on what we planned to buy. In fact, we almost drove off without picking up the original item waiting for us. In our busy lives, distractions can easily pull us away from what truly matters.
In Luke 21:34-35, Jesus warns us to guard against these distractions that can lead us away from our faith. His call to vigilance is crucial, reminding us to evaluate our hearts and stay focused on our relationship with God. What's amazing is that, when we practice mindfulness, we usually succeed.
In 1 Peter 5:8-9, Paul urges us to be sober-minded and alert, for our adversary is like a roaring lion, seeking to devour. This imagery reinforces the necessity of spiritual vigilance. Similarly, Matthew 25:1-13 shares the parable of the ten virgins, emphasizing the importance of being prepared for the bridegroom’s arrival. Together, these scriptures challenge us to confront our distractions and recommit to our faith.
As we navigate our daily lives, we need to cultivate a heart of readiness, engaging in practices that draw us closer to God. Experiment with mindfulness towards God, such as asking Him before making any quick decisions (or going inside Walmart on Black Friday, lol)
Let's Pray:
Lord, help us to guard our hearts against distractions that lead us away from You. May we remain vigilant and prepared, ready to meet You when You return.
Amen.
