Advent 2024 - Day 5

Day 5: Thursday, December 5, 2024
Primary Scripture: Luke 21:29-30
Associated Scriptures: Mark 13:28-31; James 5:7-9

I was surprisingly pleased to learn that our church has so many Master Gardener's.  If you were to ask any one of them they would tell you that they carefully observes the signs of changing seasons, eagerly anticipating the harvest (and blooms). In Luke 21:29-30, Jesus uses the metaphor of a fig tree to illustrate that when we see certain signs, we should understand that the Kingdom of God is near. This imagery highlights the importance of spiritual discernment in our walk of faith. Just as a gardener prepares for the harvest, we too must be ready for the work God is doing in our lives.

Mark 13:28-31 reinforces this idea, emphasizing that just as we recognize the changing seasons, we must also discern the signs of Christ’s return. In a similar tone, James 5:7-9 encourages us to be patient as we await the Lord’s coming, reminding us that faith requires endurance. These passages collectively urge us to actively cultivate our relationship with God, paying attention to what He is doing in our midst.

As we observe the signs of the times, let us remain steadfast in faith, engaging in acts of love and service as we prepare for the coming harvest. The trick is in knowing that we are in a time of observation - not digging or picking. The signs will tell us when it's time to rejoice in the presence of the Lord.

Let's Pray:
Father, grant us the wisdom to recognize the signs of Your Kingdom. Help us to remain patient and steadfast as we await Your return, actively engaging in Your work until that day comes.
Amen.
